Rod Mackay graduated as a teacher in 1952 and after his marriage to the late Anne Torey in 1957 taught science for ten years. He worked in biology for six years and having also trained as an artist had his first one-man show at Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1972. Three years after Anne's death from breast cancer in 1995 he remarried another Nova Scotian, Ruth Brown. He continues to paint in a traditional style at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
